Insurance Requirements

Last updated: March 29, 2026

This page provides important information about insurance requirements, platform coverage limitations, and recommendations for both Haulers and Customers using Blue Valley Junk. Please read this information carefully before using the Platform.

1. Hauler Insurance Requirements

Haulers operating on the Blue Valley Junk platform are independent contractors solely responsible for maintaining appropriate insurance coverage. The following types of insurance are recommended or required:

General Liability Insurance

A minimum of $1,000,000 per occurrence is recommended for all haulers. General liability insurance protects against claims of bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury that may arise during the course of junk removal operations. This coverage is considered standard for service providers working on customer properties.

Commercial Auto Insurance

Commercial auto insurance is required by law for vehicles used for commercial hauling purposes in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Personal auto insurance policies typically do not cover vehicles used for business purposes. Haulers must ensure their vehicles are properly insured for commercial use, including coverage for cargo in transit.

Workers' Compensation

Workers' compensation insurance is required under Virginia law if a hauler has employees. Even sole proprietors without employees should consider this coverage for their own protection. Virginia requires workers' compensation coverage for businesses with three or more employees.

Environmental Liability

Environmental liability insurance is recommended for haulers who handle construction debris, demolition waste, or materials that may be hazardous-adjacent. This coverage protects against claims related to pollution, contamination, and improper disposal. Haulers who frequently handle paint, chemicals, electronics, or construction materials should strongly consider this coverage.

Important Notice

Blue Valley Junk does NOT verify insurance coverage. The "Insurance Verified" badge displayed on hauler profiles indicates self-reported coverage only. This badge means the hauler has stated they carry insurance, but Blue Valley Junk has not independently confirmed this claim, reviewed any insurance documents, or verified that coverage is active and adequate.

2. Platform Limitations

It is critical that all users understand the following limitations regarding insurance and the Blue Valley Junk platform:

  • Blue Valley Junk does NOT provide insurance coverage for haulers or customers. No insurance policy, surety bond, or guarantee of any kind is provided by the platform.
  • Blue Valley Junk is NOT an insurance company, insurance broker, or insurance agent. We do not sell, recommend, or endorse any insurance products or providers.
  • All transactions on the platform are at-your-own-risk between independent parties. Blue Valley Junk acts solely as a technology intermediary connecting customers with haulers.
  • Customers should verify hauler insurance independently before allowing work on their property. Request certificates of insurance directly from the hauler and confirm coverage with the insurance carrier.

3. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong

If an issue arises during or after a junk removal job, the appropriate steps depend on the nature of the problem:

Property Damage

If property damage occurs during a job, contact the hauler directly to resolve the issue. If the hauler is unresponsive or unwilling to address the damage, you may file a dispute on the platform through your booking details page. Note that Blue Valley Junk's dispute resolution process is designed for payment disputes only and does not extend to property damage claims. You may need to file a claim against the hauler's general liability insurance or pursue resolution through other legal channels.

Personal Injury

If a personal injury occurs at a job site, contact emergency services immediately (call 911). After receiving appropriate medical care, contact your own health insurance provider and, if applicable, your homeowners or renters insurance company. Blue Valley Junk does not provide medical coverage, workers' compensation, or any form of injury protection. Personal injury claims must be directed to the responsible party and their insurance carrier.

Payment Disputes

Blue Valley Junk's dispute resolution system is available exclusively for payment disputes. If you believe you were overcharged, did not receive the agreed-upon service, or have a billing concern, you may file a dispute through the platform. See our Terms of Service for complete details on the dispute resolution process.

Communication Assistance

Blue Valley Junk may assist with facilitating communication between customers and haulers regarding disputes or concerns. However, Blue Valley Junk has no obligation to resolve claims, mediate disputes, or take sides in any disagreement between users. Any assistance provided is voluntary and does not create any duty, liability, or responsibility on the part of Blue Valley Junk.

4. Recommended Coverage for Customers

Customers should ensure they have adequate insurance coverage before allowing any work on their property:

  • Homeowners or renters insurance should cover most property damage claims that may occur during junk removal services. Review your policy to understand your coverage limits, deductibles, and exclusions.
  • Document everything with photos and videos before and after the job. Take detailed photographs of the work area, surrounding property, and any items being removed before the hauler arrives. This documentation can be invaluable if a claim needs to be filed.
  • Keep all receipts, invoices, and communications related to the job. These records may be needed to support an insurance claim or dispute.
  • Consider requiring a certificate of insurance from the hauler before work begins. A legitimate, insured hauler should be able to provide this documentation upon request.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Does Blue Valley Junk provide any insurance for jobs booked through the platform?

No. Blue Valley Junk does not provide, underwrite, or guarantee any insurance coverage for any transaction on the platform. All insurance responsibilities rest with the individual haulers and customers.

What does the "Insurance Verified" badge mean on a hauler's profile?

The "Insurance Verified" badge indicates that the hauler has self-reported that they carry insurance coverage. Blue Valley Junk has NOT independently verified this claim. Customers should request and verify proof of insurance directly from the hauler before allowing work on their property.

What should I do if a hauler damages my property?

Document the damage with photographs immediately. Contact the hauler directly to discuss resolution. If the hauler has general liability insurance, they should be able to file a claim. You may also file a claim with your own homeowners or renters insurance. Blue Valley Junk's dispute system handles payment disputes only and is not designed for property damage claims.

Can Blue Valley Junk help me resolve an insurance claim with a hauler?

Blue Valley Junk may assist with facilitating communication between parties but has no obligation to do so. Insurance claims are a matter between the customer, the hauler, and their respective insurance carriers. Blue Valley Junk is not a party to any insurance claim.

Are haulers required to have insurance to use the platform?

While Blue Valley Junk strongly recommends that all haulers maintain appropriate insurance coverage, the platform does not currently require proof of insurance as a condition of registration. Haulers are independently responsible for complying with all applicable laws, including insurance requirements for commercial hauling in Virginia.

What types of insurance should I look for when choosing a hauler?

At minimum, look for haulers who carry general liability insurance and commercial auto insurance. If the job involves heavy items, structural work, or potentially hazardous materials, you may also want to confirm the hauler carries environmental liability insurance and workers' compensation (if they have employees).
