Moving Out? A Complete Junk Removal Checklist

Blue Valley Junk Team
September 20, 2025

Moving is stressful enough without hauling a bunch of stuff you do not even want to your new place. The weeks before a move are the perfect time to declutter aggressively. Use this room-by-room checklist to figure out what to get rid of before packing day.

4 to 6 Weeks Before Your Move

Start early so you are not overwhelmed. Begin with areas you use the least:

  • Walk through every room and identify items you no longer want or need
  • Check the attic, basement, crawl space, and storage closets
  • Set up a staging area (garage or spare room) for items to donate, sell, or haul away
  • List valuable items for sale on Facebook Marketplace or local buy/sell groups

Room-by-Room Checklist

Kitchen

  • Expired pantry items, spices, and condiments
  • Chipped or mismatched dishes and glasses
  • Duplicate utensils and gadgets you never use
  • Old small appliances (blenders, coffee makers, toasters)
  • Stained or worn dish towels and pot holders

Bedrooms

  • Clothing that does not fit or you have not worn in a year
  • Old mattresses and pillows (most movers will not move soiled mattresses)
  • Broken furniture and lamps
  • Books you will not read again

Bathrooms

  • Expired medications (bring to a pharmacy for safe disposal)
  • Old toiletries and half-empty bottles
  • Worn towels and bath mats

Living and Family Rooms

  • Outdated electronics (old DVD players, cables, remotes)
  • Worn-out furniture you planned to replace
  • Stacks of old magazines and newspapers
  • Decor that will not match your new space

Garage and Outdoor Areas

  • Dried-out paint cans and old chemicals (take to hazardous waste drop-off)
  • Broken yard tools and equipment
  • Scrap wood, old lumber, and leftover building materials
  • Flat tires, car parts, and automotive fluids
  • Damaged outdoor furniture and grills

2 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Schedule junk removal for items you cannot donate or sell
  • Drop off donations at local centers (Goodwill, Habitat ReStore, etc.)
  • Arrange for large item pickup if your waste service offers it
  • Cancel any items that did not sell online

Moving Week

  • Do a final sweep of every room, closet, and cabinet
  • Check the attic, crawl space, and any outdoor storage
  • Have your junk removal hauler come for a final pickup of remaining items
  • Leave the property clean and empty for the next occupant

Why Declutter Before Moving?

Every item you get rid of before moving day saves you money. Moving companies charge by weight or volume, so less stuff means lower moving costs. You also save time packing and unpacking, and you start fresh in your new home without the baggage of things you do not need.
